The Baltimore Review Winter Contest

The Baltimore Review seeks short fiction, creative nonfiction, or poetry on the theme of the future. Word limit is 3000 for prose or up to three poems per entry.

Prizes:  First place, $500; Second place, $200; Third place, $100. All entries will be considered for publication.

Reading fee: $10 per submission.

Flash Fiction Challenge: Fire Escape

In all the time I’d known Barry, this might have been the wackiest plan he’d had yet.

He was always the dreamer and the schemer. So far, things had always worked out, though not usually as planned.

But this – robbing a bank dressed as firemen?

In 250 words or less, tell us a story incorporating the elements in the picture. The 250 word limit will be strictly enforced.

Glimmer Train’s Short Story Award for New Writers

Glimmer Train is accepting submissions for their last quarterly Short Story Award for New Writers of 2013. Open only to writers who have not been published in a print publication with a circulation over 5,000.

Flash Fiction Challenge: Watching the Watcher

Kit Rivers, celebrated wildlife photographer, watched and waited from her vantage point on the low, wooded ridge near the water.

It had been a good outing. She’d gotten great pics of bear, elk, foxes, and wolves. This moose was a bonus shot. Unfortunately, her camera’s batteries were running low.

It was unfortunate because this was the last picture she snapped before she turned around to realize the whole time she was watching the wildlife, she was also being watched.

In 250 words or less, tell us a story incorporating the elements in the picture. The 250 word limit will be strictly enforced.
