Suggestion Box

The universe of Indie authors is a diverse one. We at Indies Unlimited do our best to provide quality content and convenient site features to our ever-growing reader base. Sometimes we get praise for these efforts. Sometimes we get helpful suggestions. Some few times we get a little mean-spirited criticism.

I’m a big, tough Evil Mastermind, so the detractors can’t really raise a welt on me, but there are times when it seems to me that people do get frustrated when we fail to act immediately on the great idea they suggested lo, these many hours ago.

I can understand that people may not know what goes on backstage at this multi-megawatt nuclear-powered deathstar of a blog, so I thought I’d offer you a peek behind the curtain. Continue reading “Suggestion Box”

Melissa Pearl Joins The Staff of Indies Unlimited

Author Melissa Pearl

I am pleased to announce that my satellite-based tranquilizer gun is working and I have now been able to—um, persuade New Zealand based author Melissa Pearl to join the team here at Indies Unlimited.

Melissa is the author of the Time Spirit Trilogy, which includes Golden Blood, Black Blood, and Pure Blood. She was born in Auckland, New Zealand, but has spent much of her life abroad, living in countries such as Jordan, Cyprus and Pakistan… not to mention a nine month road trip around North America with her husband.

She is now relocating to China with her husband and two sons. She is a trained elementary teacher, but writing is her passion. Since becoming a full time mother she has had the opportunity to pursue this dream and her debut novel hit the internet in November, 2011. She loves learning about the craft of writing and endeavours to make each new book better than the last.

You can learn more about author Melissa Pearl and her writing at her blogs, Melissa Pearl and YALicious. You can also find her on Facebook and follow her on Twitter.

Please give a warm Indies Unlimited welcome to Melissa Pearl!

A Blog of Your Own

I am a huge fan of personal blogs and their not so subtle messages. Personal blogs are fascinating, both in their success or failure to transmit the image their owner desires. This is another installment of “Your style According to Lois.” Here are the questions I want you to ponder without being overly sensitive and defensive: what does your blog say about you? Do you even know what you want it to say? This is an intervention and help is on the way.

In order to know what you want your blog to look like, you need to do some research. This is what I tell my husband when I am on Net-A-Porter or Sonja Morgan’s blog. The phrase, “I’m doing research, dear”, can get you out of a lot of conversations. Why would I take the time to Google a Real Housewife of New York? Because these women understand self-promotion to a level never before seen by man. To visit a celebrities’ blog, especially a reality TV star, is to see the culture of narcissism in a pure and perfect state. We shy and promotionally challenged writers need to study these experts at work. Continue reading “A Blog of Your Own”

A Big Thank You

The past few weeks I’ve written some pretty heavy stuff. The long and tedious “Department of Justice Investigation” post—did anyone actually make it through that? The detailed “Categories to #1” post was a mind bender.

I’m going to ease off the pedal today and try to keep this post under 1,000 words. Actually, this post is one of the easiest I’ll ever do. I want to pause for a moment and just say … THANKS!

Seriously, so many of you have been such a big help to me. Let me start with the Indies Unlimited contributing authors. Wow, I don’t think a better collection of authors exist that help others become successful every day of the week. Man, you guys are good. I’ve learned so much in the brief two months that I’ve been a part of this. Continue reading “A Big Thank You”
