Sonnet for a Fan

Social Networking is weird. No doubt. I hate to spam and promote. I do it because I like to eat. But I hate it. When I first started putting music on the internet (years ago), I wrote a sonnet for my 100th ‘fan’.  I have done this with songs and stories many times on FB and beyond; it is a good way to make a real connection. I am constantly searching for ways to humanize the internet. This is a fun one.

so many friends who do not know my name

deign to grace me with their wit or cleavage

’tis true this is a fickle place for fame,

and hard to pick among the amperage

yet from the flock of birds does one alight

settling like a fall blown leaf does drift

to burn a phoenix dance into the night

and in this forum seek society’s shrift

at ninety-nine they stood like solemn knights

just waiting for the hundredth to emerge

they drifted through this cyberspace like kites

catching every gust of wind that surged

but there can only be one hundredth made

and i’m pretty sure that it was ‘luscious jade’

I have no idea who Luscious Jade is or was. But people were amused. And that, my friends, is priceless.  Try it.  Make a friend.

  1. Hi JD

I play with the sonnet form quite a bit and even have a ebook with a few of my sonnets. I like to play with shortening the lines though.

    Nice job.

  2. Only you would have written a Shakespearean sonnet to someone named Luscious Jade…so random, so perfectly named, so fitting! Society's shrift…lovely too. I think Bill would be very proud 🙂

  3. Love the combination of elegant old forms and shiny new technology. How rarely those worlds collide. Shine on, sonnet-writing sir!
