Moira let herself be led; up the stairs and then the tugging stopped below the loft hatch. She stood there wondering how she was going to get up there. A pole came floating through the air, one with a hook on the end. Moira had to stifle a scream as it hung there in mid-air. Gingerly, she took it and hooked it onto the mechanism on the hatch. Giving it a tug, the hatch came down with a ladder attached. Moira’s heart was in her mouth, and the palms of her hands felt sweaty. Aware of the thudding in her chest, she climbed the ladder.
It was cold in the attic. Her breath hung in the air. The solitary light bulb cast only a dim light; it rocked slightly by some unseen and unfelt force. The shadows danced. Moira took a deep breath. The laughter of earlier seemed far off. Up here, it felt eerie. The air had a metallic tang. Moira felt the tug at her clothes again and stepped forward carefully. Stooping slightly, treading only on the wooden beams, she moved carefully, questioning what she was doing. A voice, no more than a breath said, “That’s it.”
Then she saw it in front of her, despite the gloom. It glowed faintly. As she reached out and touched it, it moved. She screamed. What was in the chest?
