This spot will do nicely.

Selena regarded the valley far below with the first flicker of hope she had known since she was brought here three years ago.

She had come with a glad heart and and a young woman’s dreams. She was one of the few who had made it from her war-torn village.

But her hopes were quickly crushed; she was delivered to Solano. Now she led a life of slavery, degradation, and abuse at the hands of strange men with dark desires.

It took a while to save enough money to get what she needed, but today would be the day. Any moment now, Solano would be coming by to find her and to deliver the requisite beating for being late with the night’s earnings. He liked to do his own dirty work with the girls.

She smiled at that, knowing his own arrogance would be his undoing. Now she would do what she was trained to do as a guerrilla fighter back in her country. Yes, this spot will do nicely…

The 9th Street Shelter was not a large one. It did not receive much in the way of donations, so there would be no turkeys for Thanksgiving.

In fact, it wasn’t even a proper shelter, as it provided no cots. In the old days, it would have been called a soup kitchen.

Nonetheless, the disheveled couple who entered that day were thankful.

A hot cup of soup helped them shake off the chill. As they prepared to huddle in the corner for some badly needed rest, the door swung open….

A thousand warriors of the Kandima stood on the grassy bank of the pond across from the castle tower.

Sorbo placed his hands on his hips as he surveyed the site. His battle-scarred face was unaccustomed to smiling, so instead it seemed he wore a grimace. He looked at Davi and arched an eyebrow as he spoke. “This is it, then? Not really very formidable for a place with such a reputation.”

Davi was unmoved by the commander’s skepticism. His attention was fixed on the tower. He spoke slowly, almost as if he were in a trance. “This is the place. You heard the horns as we approached. They know we are here. They are preparing inside.”

Sorbo turned to see the sky almost blotted out by the flight of thousands of arrows sailing from the top of the tower…

Gordon Crestwell, Realtor to the Stars, waved expansively at the property. He looked back at his clients only to see they were unimpressed.

He was growing quite tired of catering to this Texan and his trashy trophy bride. Nouveau riche.

Spitting a bit of tobacco juice on the ground, the client adjusted his Stetson and said, “Gordo, I just don’t think you’re getting what we’re talking about. We said a big place – that means Texas big.”

“Not to worry, sir. I assure you. This is just one of many properties in your price range.” Gordon seethed inwardly, but kept his thousand-watt smile beaming. The commission on such a sale would set him up for life. Unfortunately, he only had one more property to show…
